Carving Roll Seal

Cylinder seals were used from 6000 years ago to mark trade goods by rolling the seal into wet clay. They played an important role in the development of ancient writing systems. This seal has a customised story on it that was important for it’s maker.

When worn as a pendant signifies skill and capability. The Pounamu stone adze was treasured as a tool for carving meeting houses and canoes etc.

In our creation stories, a hook (Matau) was used to pull New Zealand up from the depths of the ocean. Worn as a pendant, it is a symbol of strength and reliability.

The deer sheds its antlers annually. The piece used for carving is known as the crown of the antler.

The whale bone is from an old stranding. The carved woven circle signifies the bond of the family. I have enjoyed combining a number of our precious New Zealand materials in this piece.

Paua (abalone) is a shellfish of delicate taste with a shell of rare beauty. Paua is a favourite food of the octopus (wheki) hence “wheki vs. paua”

Here, a “Kaitaki” (a guardian spirit) is combined with a “Toki” (adze) for a person of mana.

Bubu is the edible sea snail, historically an important food source. An intriguing form to follow dealing with both negative and positive space. Serpentine has some beautiful colours and is lovely to carve, being slightly softer than nephrite jade yet without the fibrous nature of jade.

Greywacke Carving

A mere is a stone weapon used during battle by Maori. Argilite is a silt stone, sourced from Takaka in the South Island. It is capable of being shaped to an extremely sharp blade.

Argilite is from Takaka in the South Island. A mere is a fighting weapon made of stone used with a stabbing strike to the head, neck and forearms.

Three Kaitaki (protectors) for three brothers. The stone is from Mt. Hikurangi on the East Coast of the North Island.

Hongi Carving

Based on the creation story about the separation of Rangi (Mother) and Papa (Father). This piece of stone had a white skin on a red background, enabling it to be carved in a cameo style. The cameo was popular in the 1800s.
